Dogs are some of our furry best friends, which are well-loved by many of us but please be a responsible owner and neuter your pets if you are not planning to breed them. Otherwise, this could lead to a lot of unwanted puppies being born, making stray dog problems worse than they already are.

Recently, a registered non-governmental organisation (NGO) and a no-kill animal shelter known as HOPE posted some photos of a mass culling done on some stray dogs in Seremban that outraged Malaysians. The incident reportedly happened on Thursday (Sept 5) at around 10.45am and they euthanised the dogs right on the streets.

Apparently, some media were invited to witness the Seremban Municipal Council (MPS) and the Department Of Veterinary Services (DVS) joining forces to kill the stray dogs as well. Photos were uploaded to the MPS Facebook page, which received severe backlash from netizens and were subsequently removed.

In the post, HOPE said, “Mass culling does not help the situation at all, neutering is the only solution. Is there still hope for all these stray animals? There should be regulations on pet breeding, trading, severe punishments for owners who abandoned their pets animals and more effort put into neutering animals.”

“In the end, all they do is to harm all these helpless stray furkids. The problem always comes from human beings, but those who suffer and die are all the animals that cannot speak for themselves. Now they are killing the strays, when is this mass culling going to end? Rest in peace, furkids,” they added.

In less than 24 hours, the post had more than 5,700 shares as people were shocked that they would perform the culling in a residential area, in full view of anyone who was passing by at that time.

Here are some of the comments:

However, Nicole Tan Lee Koon, part of the Negeri Sembilan Executive State Council said that they were shocked by the cruelty and were not aware of these mass culling. She said that they had been planning and discussing on neutering the strays before this, Sinchew reported.

She added that there might have been serious miscommunication and apologised for this culling as they have ordered the senseless killing to stop. Apparently, MPS and DVS members were required to be present during the culling to prevent animal abuse. Well, the dogs were probably not abused but killed instead.

Culling is only a short-term solution that is killing innocent animals’ lives, there are better ways to stop this problem!
